What is dispensationalism?
Dispensationalism reads the Bible as a progression of distinct stewardships (dispensations) in which God tests humanity under different arrangements, each ending in failure and judgment, and each pointing to Christ. It holds Israel and the church distinct and reads prophecy literally.
What the text states
A "dispensation" is a stewardship, an ordering of God's household for a period (Eph 1:10, 3:2). Scripture is not one flat covenant but "at sundry times and in divers manners" (Heb 1:1). Each dispensation has a stewardship given, a test, a failure, and a judgment, and each reveals more of God's plan and man's need of grace. The framework keeps two things clear that other systems blur: Israel and the church are distinct peoples with distinct promises, and prophecy is read literally, so the covenants to Abraham and David await literal fulfillment in the millennium. Scofield, Chafer, Ryrie, and Walvoord systematized it; its roots are as old as the plain reading of the text.
Covenant theology reads Scripture as one covenant of grace across two administrations, with the church as the continuation or replacement of Israel. We hold the dispensational distinction because the New Testament treats Israel and the church as distinct (Rom 11, 1 Cor 10:32) and Israel's unconditional covenants remain unfulfilled.
