Is speaking in tongues for today? What is the gift of tongues?
Tongues was the Spirit-given ability to speak a language not learned (Acts 2:4-8). This platform holds the continuationist view common to Calvary Chapel: the gifts continue, in Paul's order (1 Cor 14), never required as proof of salvation or of the Spirit.
What the text states
At Pentecost the disciples spoke known languages hearers recognized (Acts 2:6-11). Paul regulates the gift: it must be interpreted, exercised in order, and love ranks above it (1 Cor 13-14). Calvary Chapel's position, followed here, is continuationist but restrained: tongues are for today but never the evidence of salvation or Spirit-baptism, and orderly worship governs their use (1 Cor 14:40).
Cessationism holds the sign gifts ceased with the apostles, reading 1 Cor 13:10 as the completed canon. We hold the continuationist view with Calvary Chapel, while rejecting the Pentecostal requirement that tongues prove Spirit-baptism.
