Walt Brown, Ph.D. — Creation and the Flood

1937–2025 · Center for Scientific Creation · Origins / Young-Earth lane

Dr. Walter T. Brown Jr. earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow. A West Point graduate, he retired as a full colonel after twenty-one years in the military, having served as an Army Ranger and paratrooper, as Director of Benét Laboratories, as a tenured associate professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and as Chief of Science and Technology Studies at the Air War College. For much of his life he was an evolutionist. After years of study he became convinced of the scientific case for creation and a global Flood, and he devoted the rest of his life to it as founder and director of the Center for Scientific Creation.

His Life's Work

His life's work is one book, revised across more than three decades: In the Beginning: Compelling Evidence for Creation and the Flood, now in its 9th edition. It gathers 131 categories of scientific evidence for creation, develops his hydroplate theory of the global Flood, and answers forty-four of the questions he was asked most often.

Why the Whosoever Study Bible Cites Him

The WSB reads Genesis 1–11 as history: six literal days, a real Adam, a real Fall, and a global Flood, on a young earth. Walt Brown spent a career, and the full weight of an MIT engineering training, arguing that the physical evidence fits that reading and not deep time. On the age of the earth, the reach of the Flood, and the speed at which real geology can happen, he is one of the clearest voices a study Bible can put beside the text.

We cite him the way we cite every scholar here: the verse leads, and the scholar confirms.Genesis 7:11 does not depend on Walt Brown's model of the fountains of the great deep. But when a reader asks whether a worldwide flood is even possible, it helps to hear a scientist explain how the deep could break open, how the water could carve a canyon in weeks, and why the mammoths of Siberia were buried where no mammoth could feed today.

What We Cite Him For

The global Flood as real, datable, catastrophic history (Genesis 6–9; 2 Peter 3:5–6). A young earth and solar system against the assumptions of radiometric dating. Rapid geology: strata, the Grand Canyon, limestone, coal, and fossils formed quickly, not over millions of years. The fountains of the great deep (Genesis 7:11; Job 38:8–11). And a careful catalog of the sixty-eight places where the New Testament, and Jesus Himself, treat the first eleven chapters of Genesis as history.

The Boundary We Keep

Walt Brown's hydroplate theory is a scientific model, and we cite it as one— a way of picturing how the Flood could have worked, never as something the text of Genesis requires. His more far-reaching proposals (that comets and asteroids were launched from the earth during the Flood, that the earth's radioactivity was produced by the Flood, that the earth later “rolled” on its axis) are his own, debated even among creation scientists, and we do not present them as settled. He is not a source for how we read salvation, prophecy, or the church; he did not write on those questions. And where he differs from other creation scientists on the mechanism of the Flood, we cite each for what he holds in common with the text, not for the dispute between them.

His care with Scripture, and his refusal to let difficulty become an excuse for vagueness, is exactly the spirit this platform is built on.

“Every New Testament writer refers to the early chapters of Genesis.”

THREAD 5 · DISPENSATIONAL ROADMAP

Thread 5, the Dispensational Roadmap, begins at Genesis 1:1 and runs through the global Flood of Genesis 6–9 — real events in a real chronology, not a frame for deep time. Walt Brown's work is a confirming witness to that starting point: the fountains of the great deep broke open, the world was judged, and the geology we stand on carries the record of it.
