Life

“Troy met Jesus when he was just six years old, and that moment marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith and surrender. In high school, his family moved to California, where he started attending Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. It was there he met Rebecca, the girl who would become his wife and ministry partner.”

“In 1988, God opened the door for Troy and Rebecca to step into full-time ministry, serving young adults in Sydney, Australia. A few years later, they returned to Southern California, where Troy joined the team at Calvary Chapel Vista, leading in youth and missions. But it wasn’t long before God stirred their hearts for something new.”

“In 1994, Troy and Rebecca followed the call to plant a church on the East Coast, and Calvary Chapel Lynchburg was born. For over 30 years, Troy has been faithfully leading, teaching, and pointing people to Jesus, one verse and one chapter at a time. He’s currently taking the church through the Bible for the fourth time.”

“Troy and Rebecca have three amazing adult children and a growing crew of grandkids who fill their lives with joy.”

The church tells the same story from its own end: “In Lynchburg, a small group of people were quietly praying and dreaming for something big: a Calvary Chapel ministry that would bring together the verse-by-verse teaching of God’s Word, as well as Spirit-led and Bible-based worship that Calvary Chapels are known for.” Of the move it says, “On August 1, 1994, Pastor Troy and his family made the move to Lynchburg, ready to launch a simple yet powerful ministry—teaching the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, while loving and leading the growing family God was bringing together.”

What he teaches

THE BIBLE

We Believe that the SCRIPTURES of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired without error in the original manuscripts, and the infallible rule of faith and practice. The Word of God is the foundation upon which the church operates and is the basis upon which the church is governed. We believe that the Word of God supersedes any earthly law that is contrary to the Holy Scriptures (Isaiah 28:13; Nehemiah 8:8; John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Hebrews 4:12; 1 Peter 1:23-25; 2 Peter 1:3-4 and 1:19-21)

THE TRINITY

We Believe that there is one living and true GOD, eternally existing in three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; that this triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all things. (Genesis 1:1; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 44:8 and 48:16; Matthew 28:19-20; John 10:30; Hebrews 1:3)

GOD THE FATHER

We Believe in the person of GOD THE FATHER, an infinite, eternal, personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all those who come to Him through Jesus Christ. (Deuteronomy 33:27; Psalms 90:2 and 102:27; John 3:16 and 4: 23- 24; 1 Timothy 1:17; Titus 1:3)

GOD THE SON

We Believe in the person of JESUS CHRIST, God’s only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teachings, His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people and personal, visible return to earth. (Isaiah 7:14; Micah 5:2; Matthew 1:23; Mark 16:19; Luke 1: 35; John 1:1-2, 8:58 and 11:25; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; 1 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 1:8; 1 John 1:2; Revelation 1:8)

GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT

We Believe in the HOLY SPIRIT, Who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify and empower for ministry all who believe in Christ; we believe the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all Biblical gifts of the Spirit. (John 16:8-11; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:26 and 15:13,16; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Hebrews 9:14)

THE CHURCH

We Believe in the universal Church, the living spiritual body, of which Christ is the Head and all regenerated persons are members. (1 Corinthians 12:12-14; Ephesians 4:15-16)

SALVATION BY GRACE

We believe that all people are sinners by nature and choice, falling short of God’s standard and breaking His commandments – and therefore are under God’s righteous judgment. Yet, God saves and gives new life to all who come to Him in repentance and faith, trusting in the Person and work of Jesus Christ. This salvation is not based upon works but th e grace of God. At the cross, Jesus Christ died in our place as our substitute, absorbing God’s wrath that should have come upon us. Because Jesus died for the sins of the world the invitation to believe is open to all, and whoever desires may come unto Jesus for new life and the forgiveness of sins. Apart from receiving this grace through faith in Jesus Christ no person can be saved (Matthew 11:28; John 3:16; Acts 3:19, 20:21; Romans 3:23; Ephesians 2:1-3, 8-9; I John 2:2; Revelation 22:17)

BAPTISM & COMMUNION

We Believe that the Lord Jesus Christ committed two ORDINANCES to the Church: l) baptism, and 2) the Lord’s Supper. We believe in baptism by immersion and communion open to all believers. (Matthew 28:19; Luke 22:19-20; Acts 2:38; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

CHRIST’S SECOND COMING

We Believe in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, which is His personal, visible return to Earth and the establishment of His millennial Kingdom, in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and eternal blessing of the righteous and endless suffering of the wicked. (Matthew 16:27; Acts 1:11; Revelation 19:11-16, 20:11-15)

MARRIAGE

We believe in the Biblical account of creation and God as the Creator. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ validated the ordinance of marriage. We believe that God created man and that He created them male and female. As such, He created them differently to complement and complete each other. God instituted monogamous marriage between male and female as the foundation of the family and the basic structure of human society. For this reason, homosexuality, and all other “sexual preferences” or “orientations” are unnatural, sinful, and unacceptable to God. Accordingly , this ministry will not perform any marriage ceremonies between individuals of the same sex. It will not condone or recognize such same-sex marriages, civil unions, or domestic partnerships even if the state and or federal government passes laws that provide for recognition of such unions. (Genesis 1:1, 1:27, 2:24; Matthew 19:4-5 ; John 2:1-11 ; Ephesians 5:31-33)

SEX & GENDER

We believe that marriage is exclusively the legal union of one genetic male and one genetic female , and is evidenced by a marriage ceremony. We also believe that legitimate biblical sexual relations are exercised solely within the bounds of a biblical marriage. Hence, sexual activities such as, but not limited to, adultery, fornication, pre-marital sex, incest, polygamy, homosexuality, transgenderism, bisexuality, cross-dressing, pedophilia, and bestiality are inconsistent with the teachings of the Bible and the CHURCH. Further more , lascivious behavior, the creation of , viewing of, and/or distribution of pornography , as well as efforts to alter one’s physical gender or gender related appearance are incompatible with a true biblical witness. (John 4:16-18; Romans 1: 26 -32; I Corinthians 5:11, 6:9-11, 6:18-20, 7:1-3 and 7:8-9; Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 5:3-7; 1 Timothy 1:9-11)

Radio

EquipFM · Linked from every page of the church’s site, and titled on its own page “EquipFM – Virginia’s Home for Bible Teaching & Worship”. The church’s site names it and links it; what the church’s formal relation to the station is, it does not say, so this page does not say either.

What this page could not source
    • A portrait. The church publishes staff photographs but no media or press terms, so none is ours to take.
    • A colour beyond the one hue. The church names --ccl--color--orange in its stylesheet and nothing else; the wordmark is white.
    • The year he was born. His own account dates itself by age at conversion and by the years of the call, never by a birth year.
    • What his formal relation to EquipFM is. The church links the station from every page and does not describe the connection.
    • Whether the Rebecca Warner on the church’s staff list, under Women’s Ministry, is the Rebecca of his bio. The two pages never say so, and the surname is not an answer.
    • Where he was between Sydney in 1988 and Calvary Chapel Vista. His profile says “a few years later” and leaves the years unnamed; the church’s own story says he spent four years at Vista, which the profile does not.
