The Red Heifer
“This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke:”

The strangest sacrifice in the law: a red heifer, without spot, that had never worn a yoke, killed outside the camp and burned whole, and its ashes kept to make the water that cleansed anyone who touched a dead body.
It is the only sacrifice burned entirely outside the camp, and the only one whose ashes were saved rather than poured out. Hebrews puts Christ in exactly that place: “the bodies of those beasts... are burned without the camp. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate” (Heb 13:11-12). He died outside the city wall, like the heifer, to make the water that cleanses the ones who have touched death. One heifer's ashes served the whole nation for generations; the ninth-century rabbis counted only a handful ever made.
