The Plumbline
“Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.”

God showed Amos a man standing on a wall with a plumbline in his hand, and said, “Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more” (Amos 7:7-8). A plumbline is a weight on a string that hangs dead straight; it tells you whether a wall is true. God was not measuring Israel against other nations or against their own past. He was hanging the one true vertical beside them.
A plumbline never argues. It does not push the wall or lecture it; it just hangs true, and the wall’s own lean shows against it. That is how God’s word works: “the word of God is quick, and powerful... a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Heb 4:12). You do not measure the line against the wall. You measure the wall against the line. And the line here is grace as much as judgment, God set it “in the midst of my people,” not against His enemies, because the ones He owns are the ones He holds to true.
