Aaron's Rod That Budded
“And it came to pass, that on the morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds.”

Twelve dead sticks were laid up in the tabernacle overnight, one for each tribe, to settle who God had chosen to serve Him. In the morning Aaron's rod “was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds” (Num 17:8).
Buds, blossoms, and ripe almonds at once, three seasons in a single night on dead wood. It is a picture of resurrection before there was a resurrection: life the ground could not produce, from a rod cut off and dead. It was kept in the ark beside the tables of the law (Heb 9:4), which means God stored the proof of chosen life next to the commandments that condemn. The almond tree is the first to wake in spring; the Hebrew for it, *shaqed*, means “the watcher.”
