Chapter the Twenty-second

Whosoever Will: The Final Word

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Verses 1-21 You know it is going to be new, because these don't exist anymore here. of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. And in the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bore twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month ( Revelation 22:1-2 ): So, you have an interesting kind of a tree here. And of course, we have been fooling around genetically with trees and plants and we have been able to do a lot of interesting things with genetic manipulation of plants and trees. We have created different types of hybrids and different kinds of resistances and so forth. In fact, they have created a tomato plant now in Israel at the Beersheba University, a tomato plant that you can irrigate with seawater. You don't get salty tomatoes. But who knows; maybe they will be able to develop that in time where the tomato would already be salted when you get it. But they are irrigating tomato plants now with Mediterranean Sea water. And they are doing a lot of things with the genetic codes. The new thing here is these new seedless flame grapes. And it's great what man has been able to do messing around with some of the genetic codes of some of the plants and trees. When I was a kid we lived off of North Broadway Street here in Santa Ana, and we had a tree that had both Navel and Valencia oranges growing on it, as well as grapefruits and lemons. So, during part of the year we could pick the Valencia oranges, during the winter months pick the navel oranges, and in the meantime, eat the grapefruit and have lemonade. It was just a thing of grafting into the basic root system the various types of citrus fruits. And now you can buy some trees that have peaches and nectarines on them. It is interesting. God is going to have a tree that has twelve different kinds of fruit and every month a fruit will be ripe. It is going to be a neat tree. I am such a fruit lover anyhow; I am going to see if I can get a few of those planted in my yard. and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations ( Revelation 22:2 ). So, there will be a medicinal value in the leaves of the tree. The earth, you remember, was cursed as a result of sin. "Cursed will be the ground; thorns and thistles will it bring forth. Cursed be man, by the sweat of his brow shall he earn his bread" Genesis 3:18-19 ), and so forth. There will be no more curse. but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face ( Revelation 22:3-4 ); "Blessed are the pure in heart", Jesus said, "for they shall see God" ( Matthew 5:8 ). "They shall see His face", and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, nor light of the sun; for the Lord God gives them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever ( Revelation 22:3-5 ). And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true ( Revelation 22:6 ): It sounds too good to be true. It sounds, wow! So the Lord affirms that these are true and faithful sayings. Again, the affirmation of the truth of what God is declaring for your skeptical mind that finds it hard to believe that God should do such a thing for us. For we are so unworthy and undeserving that we should reign forever and ever in His glorious New Kingdom and New World and new age. So, the Lord assures you these are true and faithful sayings. and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. Behold ( Revelation 22:6-7 ), I come quickly: blessed is he that keeps the sayings of the prophecy of this book. And I John saw these things, I heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me those things ( Revelation 22:7-8 ). He did this a little earlier and the angel said to him to stand up. "Don't do that." But John is overwhelmed again; he is just wiped out, overwhelmed that the guy tells him that, so he falls down at his feet again to worship him Then the angel said, Don't do that: for I am thy fellowservant, of the brethren the prophets, of those which keep the sayings of this book: worship God ( Revelation 22:9 ). Again John making the mistake that man so often makes worshipping the instrument of God. "Don't do that. Worship God." And he said unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand ( Revelation 22:10 ). Now, you remember when he talked to Daniel, he said seal up those things and don't write them, for they are for the end. In the last days, knowledge will be increased. So, seal them up there will be a time that they will be understood, but they are not for you, Daniel. Now with John, he said, "don't seal the book. Leave it open, because things are going to start working out". Now the interesting thing is that so many people look at Revelation as though it were a sealed book. "Oh, that is a sealed book. You don't want to get into that. No one can understand it." It is because they don't attempt to or they attempted to spiritualize the meanings, and if you do that it becomes meaningless. So, if you just read it and say "wow" and accept it as it is, not adding to it or taking away, you have no problem. It is only when you try to spiritualize everything in it, and give everything some kind of a weird meaning, that it becomes a difficult book to understand. "So don't seal the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand." He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold [again the Lord is talking], I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be ( Revelation 22:11-12 ). Now, as a child of God I will not be judged for my sins; that has all been covered by Jesus Christ. As a child of God the gift of eternal life is just that, it is God's gift to me. I can't earn it. I do not deserve it. It is a gift of God. "By grace you are saved through faith and that not of yourself it is a gift of God; not of works lest any man should boast"( Ephesians 2:8-9 ). However, God is going to reward me according to the works that I do. There will be degrees of rewards in heaven. Now, as far as eternal life, that is God's gift. I can't deserve that or earn it. I don't deserve it. It is God's gift to me by faith in Jesus Christ, faith alone. That is the only basis upon which this gift is predicated and God gave me the faith to believe. However, now that I believe I want to serve God and I offer myself to God to serve Him, and the works that I do for God, I will be rewarded for them, those works that are done out of a pure motivation. Now, there are a lot of works that people do that there will be no reward. If your work is just for a big show to just be known among people, and they say, "Oh, man he's just a holy Joe." And you do things to give them that kind of a feeling, you learn to close your eyes at the proper time and fold your hands and you learn to talk in such a way that it sort of oozes of righteousness and spirituality, so that people they can just talk to you and know that you walk close to God. That kind of stuff is junky and there is no reward for that. Jesus said, "Take heed that you do not your righteousness before men to be seen of men, because then you have your reward"( Matthew 6:1 ). So, when you pray don't go out on the street corner and do a big thing so that everyone goes by and says, "What is happening? "Oh, he's a spiritual man." "Go in your closet, shut the door and talk to your Father who sees in secret and He will reward you openly" ( Matthew 6:6 ). When you give don't make a big to-do over it; don't play the Halleluia chorus and do cartwheels. Learn to do things without drawing attention to yourself. "Let your light so shine before men that when they see your good works they glorify your Father which is in heaven"( Matthew 5:16 ), because we will be rewarded according to those works that have right motivation. Now, Jesus said, "If we do our works to be seen of men then we have our reward now." So, be careful about that. There is a real danger, subtle danger there. "So, I'm coming quickly. My rewards are with Me and I'm going to reward every man according to his work." You remember the one who received the five talents? How he brought them and said, "Lord you gave me five and I increased them and I now have ten." "Good job. I am going to make you ruler over ten cities. Enter into the joy of the Lord." "Lord you gave me four talents and I went out and used them and I have eight." All right, good work, make you ruler over eight cities." "Hey, Lord, I know you are an austere man. You like to reap where you didn't sow and so forth. So I knew how you were about the money that You distributed, so I took the money and buried it and here it is, Lord. So I dug it up and got it out of the napkin and it's all preserved. You can have it back again." Not so good. No reward. "I'm coming quickly. My reward is with Me." I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last ( Revelation 22:13 ). Now, these words were declared of God the Father in chapter one. Here Jesus is talking to John and He is declaring the same thing. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city ( Revelation 22:14 ). For without are dogs, drug abusers, whoremongers, murderers, idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie. I Jesus have sent my angel to testify unto you these things in the churches ( Revelation 22:15-16 ). So, this is for the churches. The Lord sent it for the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, and the bright and the morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come ( Revelation 22:16-17 ). God's invitation to you to come and to share in the glories of His eternal kingdom. And let him that heareth say, Come. [Come Lord Jesus and establish Your kingdom.] Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely ( Revelation 22:17 ). For I testify unto every man that hears the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book ( Revelation 22:18-19 ). I cannot imagine the audacity of man to mess around with the book of Revelation with a warning like that, or to try to read something into or read something out of it. I can't imagine such audacity. That is why I take the book literally even though I may not understand all of it. I take it literally and I teach it literally, because I don't want to be guilty of adding to or taking away. I'd rather be wrong in my literal interpretation of the book than to be wrong and add to the book by spiritualizing, or take away from it by spiritualizing. In other words, this book is not to be messed with, just to be believed and practiced. "Blessed are they that read, hear and practice the words of this prophecy, putting them into practice in their lives." So, that is what it is for, to be read and heard and put into practice, not to be argued with, or disputed over or whatever. He which testifies these things saith, Surely I come quickly. So be it. Even so, come, Lord Jesus ( Revelation 22:20 ). Well, that was almost nineteen hundred years ago that He said, "Behold, I come quickly." But Lord it has been nineteen hundred years. Peter said, "In the last days there will be scoffers that will come along and saying where is the promise of His coming? Since our fathers have fallen asleep everything has gone on as it was from the beginning"( 2 Peter 3:3 ). "You know, God stepped out." Foolishness. Jesus is coming again, foolishness. Where is the promise? Things are just going to go on and on and on. There is not going to be any interruption in history. But Peter said, "God isn't slack concerning His promises," that is the promise of the coming, "as some men count slackness." But he said, "You need to consider that one day is as a thousand years to the Lord and a thousand years is as one day"( 2 Peter 3:8 ). We say it has almost been almost two thousand years. Well, the Lord says, "It has only been a couple days. Guess we better get back." "Behold, I come quickly." How, quickly is He coming for you? We don't know; do we? But I do believe that the time of the return of Jesus Christ is very, very near. There is an indication in Hosea that for two days Israel will be as dead, but in the third day God will revive them and they will live before him. Again a thousand years to a day and a day to a thousand years. For two thousand years Israel was like dead, but now they have revived. The prophecy of Hosea is fulfilled. And so I do believe that the day of the Lord is at hand. And I, with John, would respond, "Amen. Even so, come Lord Jesus." Oh, how my heart yearns for the Lord to come and the establishing of His kingdom. How I desire to see the New World, the new age with Jesus reigning as King and Lord. John's final parting words and the closing words of the Bible. How appropriate. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. So be it. ( Revelation 22:21 ) Isn't that beautiful? What a glorious way to end this glorious book. Just the bequest of God's grace or the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ upon you. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ rest or be upon or be with all of you. "So be it." Shall we pray. Lord we thank you for Your grace and by grace we will be able to participate in the glorious inheritance of the saints in light. Thank you, Lord, that you have delivered us from the power of darkness, taken the rebellion out of our hearts, and given us a heart of love, a heart of commitment, a heart of faith. Lord we want to serve You because we love You. And we thank you Lord for that hope that You have given to us of the New World, the new age where righteousness shall reign and Jesus shall reign where here the sun doth her successive journeys run. Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus. Amen. You didn't think I could do it, did you? Neither did I. Praise the Lord for His Word, a lamp unto our feet, a light unto our path, a power in our lives to keep us from sin. Life itself, "For the entrance of thy word giveth life." How we need to walk in the light of God's Word. I'm sort of excited about the possibility of starting all over again, getting back into Genesis where it all began and see how the Lord works from the beginning to the end. Now we've closed things out. We've entered on into the eons of the eternity, the future. The sun has disappeared, dissipated, gone. And in the ages to come God is now revealing to us the exceeding richness of His love and mercy towards us in Christ, on out forever and ever with our Lord. So we'll go back now and retrace the rebellion of man from the beginning; its effect upon man, mankind and God's patient dealing in love, longsuffering as He draws forth His plan and draws man to His plan that ultimately we might share with Him that eternity in His kingdom of love and grace. So may the Lord be with you and may the Lord bless you and may He prepare your heart as we prepare to start through once more. I really believe this will be the last time. Our glorious adventure learning of Him. "

Whosoever Will · the Seven Threads Commentary

Revelation 22:1

The river flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb: not from two thrones but one, the unified source of divine life. The Throne of God and the Throne of the Lamb share the same seat throughout Revelation 21-22, establishing the co-equality and co-reign that the letter to the churches announced and the judgments executed. The river is pure, lampron hōs krustallon, bright as crystal. Nothing in it is contaminated. Nothing in the new creation is. It flows down the middle of the great street of the city, which is itself pure gold transparent as glass (21:21). Everything in the new Jerusalem is characterized by the same transparency, clarity without obstruction, light without shadow. On either side of the river stands the tree of life. The last time the tree of life appeared in Scripture was Genesis 3:22-24. The moment God placed the cherubim with the flaming sword to prevent access to it after the Fall. Every book from Genesis 4 to Revelation 21 records humanity living east of Eden, cut off from the tree. Here it is again. Not behind a sword but open, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding every month, its leaves for the healing of the nations. Thread 7 is in the healing of the nations. The tree is not for Israel only, not for the Church only. Its leaves heal the nations, the ethnē, the peoples who scattered at Babel and were gathered through the gospel. Thread 2 is in the corporate people who are present before this throne. Thread 5 is in the completion: every dispensation has been moving toward this moment, the administration of the fullness of times (Ephesians 1:10) arriving at its destination.
The river of life flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb, the same source, and the tree of life that Eden locked away is now open to all nations, its leaves given for their healing.
ποταμὸν ὕδατος ζωῆς λαμπρὸν ὡς κρύσταλλον (potamon hudatos zōēs lampron hōs krustallon): a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal: hudatos zōēs (of the water of life); zōē is John's word for eternal, divine life throughout the Gospel; lampron hōs krustallon (bright as crystal), the clarity signals purity and unobstructed divine origin; the same water Jesus promised to the woman at the well (John 4:14) and to anyone who thirsts (John 7:37-38) is now flowing as a river · εἰς θεραπείαν τῶν ἐθνῶν (eis therapeian tōn ethnōn): for the healing of the nations: therapeian (healing, restoration, therapeutic renewal); tōn ethnōn (of the nations, the Gentiles, the peoples, the nations of the earth); the leaves of the tree of life heal the nations; the same nations whose rebellion and idolatry fills the historical canon are, in the new creation, healed

Revelation 22:3

No more curse. Three words in Greek, ouden katathema, and the whole weight of Genesis 3 is lifted. The ground cursed for Adam's sake. The thorns and thistles. The sweat and pain. The return to dust. Every consequence of the Fall that structured all of human history is simply absent in the new creation. Not healed, absent. The reversal is total. The throne of God and of the Lamb is in the city. His servants serve him, latreusousin, the word for priestly service. The redeemed are not passive recipients in the new creation; they are active servants of the living God. And they shall see his face. Prosōpon autou opsontai: they will behold his face. Moses asked to see the glory of God and was told that no one can see my face and live (Exodus 33:20). The new creation removes that restriction. The beatific vision, the direct, unmediated sight of God, is the inheritance of the redeemed. Thread 6 arrives at its culmination here. The in-Christ union that began at the sealing (Ephesians 1:13), deepened in sanctification, survived death, was revealed at the Rapture, now achieves its final form: his name on the forehead, his face seen directly, his light filling everything. Hidden in him, now fully revealed with him, and the revelation is permanent. Thread 3 is in the reigning: they shall reign forever and ever. The royal trajectory that ran from Genesis 3:15 through the Davidic covenant through the exaltation of Christ arrives here, not just the King reigning but the redeemed co-reigning with him. Daniel 7:27 anticipated it: the kingdom and the dominion shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High. It is given here. The image-bearers of Genesis 1:26-28 who were commissioned to rule creation are now ruling the new creation alongside the King of kings.
No more curse, the word spoken over the ground in Genesis 3:17 is reversed; the name of God on the forehead is the final seal, the face of God seen directly is Thread 6 at its consummation, and the reign forever is Thread 3 arriving at its destination.
οὐδὲν κατάθεμα (ouden katathema): no more curse: katathema (devoted thing, that which is cursed, anathema); the curse of Genesis 3, thorns, toil, pain, death, is completely absent; not diminished, not mitigated, absent; the reversal is total · τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῶν μετώπων αὐτῶν (to onoma autou epi tōn metōpōn autōn): his name shall be in their foreheads: the name of God marked on the forehead is the final seal of ownership and identity; contrasted throughout Revelation with the mark of the beast on the foreheads of those who worship him (13:16); in the new creation the people of God are permanently and visibly marked as belonging to him · βασιλεύσουσιν εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων (basileusousin eis tous aiōnas tōn aiōnōn): they shall reign for ever and ever: basileusousin (future active of basileuō, to reign, to be king); eis tous aiōnas tōn aiōnōn (into the ages of the ages, the strongest possible temporal expression for eternity); the people of God reign alongside the King; the destiny announced at creation (image-bearers ruling over creation, Genesis 1:28) is fulfilled at cosmic scale

Revelation 22:6

The angel authenticates the vision: these sayings are faithful and true. The same authentication given in Revelation 21:5, write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true. The entire sweep of what John has seen, the seals and trumpets and bowls, the judgments and the new creation, rests on the faithfulness and truth of the one who sent the vision. It is not symbol without substance or vision without event. These things must shortly be done. I come quickly. The first of three times the Lord speaks this closing declaration in chapter 22. Tachu, swiftly, suddenly. The declaration is not a promise that the clock time is short. It is a declaration that when the coming arrives it will be sudden and decisive. The posture of the believer is watchfulness (1 Thessalonians 5:6), not calendar calculation. John falls down to worship the angel, and the angel's response is immediate and precise: stop, I am your fellow-servant. Worship God. The refusal is not a small thing. Throughout Revelation, the central sin of the nations has been giving worship to the beast, to the image, to the dragon: to any recipient other than God. The book that has been filled with scenes of cosmic worship ends with the exact correction that the whole book has been arguing: worship God.
These sayings are faithful and true, the authentication of the whole vision, and the angel's refusal of worship is the correction that the entire book of Revelation prepares: worship God, not the messenger, not the vision, not the system, God.
ἰδοὺ ἔρχομαι ταχύ (idou erchomai tachu): behold I come quickly: erchomai (present active, I am coming, the coming is in motion); tachu (quickly, soon, suddenly, not necessarily immediately in clock time but in the sense of the certainty and swiftness of the event when it arrives); the three-fold I come quickly of Revelation 22 (vv.7, 12, 20) is the closing cadence of the whole book · ὅρα μή· σύνδουλός σού εἰμι (hora mē· sundoulos sou eimi): see thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, hora mē (see, beware, watch out, a strong prohibition); sundoulos (fellow-servant, co-slave); the angel refuses worship because it is a co-servant, not the master; the deflection is not false modesty but theological precision

Revelation 22:10

Seal not the sayings. Daniel was told to seal his prophecy until the time of the end (Daniel 12:4). John is told the opposite: do not seal it, for the time is at hand. The vision is meant to be read, heard, and acted on immediately. The urgency of the unsealed prophecy is the urgency of the invitation that follows in verse 17. Verse 11 is one of the most sobering declarations in the canon: the unjust remain unjust, the filthy remain filthy, the righteous remain righteous, the holy remain holy. The aorist imperatives describe the fixing of moral states at the final coming, not a command to stay where you are but the announcement that the time for change is expiring. What was always true in a provisional sense becomes permanently true: the character formed by a lifetime of choices is the character that stands before the judgment. Thread 4 runs through every verse preceding this one, genuine choices, genuinely shaping a genuine person, and this verse is where that shaping becomes permanent. I come quickly, the second declaration. My reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. The judgment is personal and precise. Then the self-identification: I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. Thread 3 arrives at its ultimate declaration: the King who is coming is the one who was before all things and who encompasses all things. The story does not end in chaos: it ends in him.
Seal not the sayings: the vision is public and urgent, unlike Daniel's sealed scroll; and the moral-state declaration of verse 11 is not fatalism but the announcement that the time for decision is ending and the time for judgment is arriving.
ὁ ἀδικῶν ἀδικησάτω ἔτι (ho adikōn adikēsatō eti): he that is unjust, let him be unjust still: the aorist imperative used here is not a command to remain in sin but a solemn declaration that the time for change is ending; at the final coming, moral states are fixed; the same pattern appears in Ezekiel 3:27, let him who will hear, hear, and let him who refuses, refuse; the urgency of the invitation in verse 17 is precisely because the moral-state fixing of verse 11 is approaching · ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ω ὁ πρῶτος καὶ ὁ ἔσχατος (egō eimi to Alpha kai to Ō ho prōtos kai ho eschatos): I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: the same self-identification given in Revelation 1:8 and 1:17; the one who comes quickly is the one who was before all things and will be after all things; Thread 3's King is not a newcomer to the story, he is the author of its beginning and the seal of its end

Revelation 22:14

The seventh and final beatitude of Revelation: blessed are those who wash their robes. The right of access to the tree of life comes from the washing, the blood of the Lamb applied to the one who has come through faith. Thread 7 is in the access: the tree of life that was closed since Genesis 3 is now open to everyone who has washed their robes. Not by moral achievement. By washing. Thread 4 is in the contrast of verse 15. Outside are those characterized by persistent moral corruption: sorcerers, the sexually immoral, murderers, idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. These are not people who stumbled and were excluded for a single sin. They are people defined by their loves and their practices. The outside is the consequence of having chosen what is inside them over what is inside the city. The gates of the new Jerusalem are described in chapter 21 as never being shut (21:25). The gates are open. The invitation is real. The access is available through the washing. What determines who is inside and who is outside is not a secret divine decree. It is the choice of what one loves and what one washes in.
Access to the tree of life and entry through the gates are for those who do his commandments, and the exclusion of verse 15 is not arbitrary but the consequence of the persistent choices that defined the excluded.
μακάριοι οἱ πλύνοντες τὰς στολὰς αὐτῶν (makarioi hoi plununtes tas stolas autōn): blessed are they that wash their robes: the better textual reading; plunō (to wash, to launder); the washed robes are washed in the blood of the Lamb (Revelation 7:14); those who have appropriated the atoning work of Christ are the ones with right of access to the tree; the access comes not from their own moral achievement but from the washing · ἔξω οἱ κύνες (exō hoi kunes): without are dogs: exō (outside, outside the city); kunes (dogs, a term for those who are morally degraded or who practice shameless acts); the list that follows names categories of persistent unrepentant practice; outside is not merely a location but a moral state, the permanent residence of those who chose what verse 15 describes over what verse 14 offers

Revelation 22:16

I Jesus have sent mine angel. The one speaking is named. This is not an angel relaying God's message. This is Jesus himself, directly authenticating the entire book. The testimony is for the churches: plural, present, real communities reading this in real time. I am the root and the offspring of David. The Christological paradox that Jesus posed to the Pharisees in Matthew 22:42-45, if David calls him Lord, how is he his son?, is answered here in Jesus's own words. He is both. The root from which the Davidic line grew, because as the eternal Son he is the source of all that exists, including David's line. And the offspring who came from that line in the fullness of time: born of a woman, born under the law, of the seed of David according to the flesh (Romans 1:3). Thread 3 has been moving toward this self-identification from Genesis 3:15. The promised seed, the scepter not departing from Judah (Genesis 49:10), the covenant with David (2 Samuel 7), the messianic psalms, Isaiah's servant songs, Daniel's Son of Man, all of it arrives at this: I am the root and the offspring of David. The story moved toward a King. The King has announced himself. The bright and morning star, the light that appears just before the dawn breaks. The darkness is ending. The day is coming.
Root and offspring of David, simultaneously the origin and the descendant of David's line, which is the Christological impossibility that Thread 3 has been moving toward since Genesis 3:15: the one who comes from David is also the one David comes from.
ἡ ῥίζα καὶ τὸ γένος Δαυίδ (hē hriza kai to genos Dauid): the root and the offspring of David: hriza (root, origin, source) + genos (offspring, descendant, genus); the same person is both the root from which David sprang (his divine origin) and the offspring that grew from David's line (his human descent); the paradox is Christological: David's Lord and David's son simultaneously (Matthew 22:42-45) · ὁ ἀστὴρ ὁ λαμπρὸς ὁ πρωινός (ho astēr ho lampros ho prōinos): the bright and morning star: lampros (bright, shining, brilliant) + prōinos (of the morning, belonging to dawn); the morning star is the star that appears just before sunrise, announcing that the darkness is ending; Numbers 22:17 predicted a star arising from Jacob; 2 Peter 1:19 describes the prophetic word as a lamp until the day dawns and the morning star rises

Revelation 22:17

This is where every thread terminates. Thread 1, A God Who Cannot Stop Reaching, opened at Genesis 3:9 when God walked in the garden and called: where are you? It ends here. The Spirit reaches. The bride reaches. And the final word of the canon is the same reaching word that opened the story: Come. Thread 7, Whosoever Will, May Come, anchored at Numbers 21:8 where every bitten person who looked at the bronze serpent lived. It ends here. The bronze serpent was lifted up; the Son of Man was lifted up (John 3:14). And the invitation at the end of the canon is the same as the invitation at the middle of the wilderness: look, come, live, and anyone bitten may look. Four voices speak the Come in this verse. The Spirit: the divine presence who convicts, draws, and illuminates. The bride: the Church, the gathered people of God, the corporate elect body of Thread 2. The one who hears, the individual who has received the invitation and now passes it on. And then the invitation itself turns outward to anyone who is thirsty. Then ho thelōn: the willing one, the one who desires. The present active participle of thelō. Not ho eklogē, the one who was selected. Not ho tetagmenos, the one who was appointed. Ho thelōn, the one who is currently in the state of desiring. The final qualification of the entire canon is want. Do you want the water of life? Take it. Dōrean: freely, as a gift, at no cost to you. The cost has already been paid. Tetelestai, it is finished (John 19:30). The basis of the open invitation is the completed work of the one who is the root and offspring of David. The water of life flows from the throne of the Lamb who was slain. The door is open because the Lamb paid to open it. And it stays open because he is faithful. Thread 4 is in the ho thelōn itself. The wanting is genuinely the person's own wanting. The desire is their desire. The taking is their taking. The coming is their coming. The invitation does not remove the genuine human act of receiving. It enables it, invites it, urgently presses toward it: let him take. The Bible began with God walking in a garden, speaking into silence, bringing life from nothing. It ends with the same God, now revealed as the Lamb who was slain from before the foundation of the world, standing at the end of a new creation: river flowing, tree bearing fruit, gates open, name on foreheads, face seen directly, and saying: if you are thirsty, come. Whosoever will, take the water of life freely. The story was always about this. The seven threads were always moving here. The God who cannot stop reaching has reached from Genesis to Revelation. The corporate people chosen in him span every tribe and language and people and nation. The story moved toward a King and the King is on his throne. The dignity of the real response is honored in the final word: it is the willing one who takes. The dispensational roadmap has reached its terminus. The hidden ones are revealed with him. And the door is open. Whosoever will, may come.
The last invitation of the canon: Spirit, bride, hearer, the thirsty, whosoever will, and the qualification is desire alone; the door that opened at Numbers 21:8 closes here, not with a lock, but with the widest possible welcome.
τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ νύμφη λέγουσιν ἔρχου (to pneuma kai hē numphē legousin erchou): the Spirit and the bride say, Come: erchou (present active imperative, come, keep coming, the coming is invited and ongoing); both the Spirit and the bride speak the same word; the Spirit who draws (John 16:8) and the Church that has been gathered speak with one voice toward those who have not yet come · ὁ θέλων λαβέτω ὕδωρ ζωῆς δωρεάν (ho thelōn labetō hudōr zōēs dōrean): whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely: ho thelōn (the articular present active participle of thelō, the one who is desiring, the one who wants); labetō (aorist active imperative, let him take, let him receive); hudōr zōēs (water of life); dōrean (freely, as a gift, without cost, gratis, the same word used of the grace of God in Romans 3:24); the only qualification is desire; the cost is zero · δωρεάν (dōrean): freely: from dōrea (gift, free giving); used in Romans 3:24 of justification given freely by grace; in 2 Corinthians 11:7 of the gospel preached without charge; in Matthew 10:8 of the disciples giving what they received without cost; the water of life costs nothing to the recipient because the cost has already been paid, tetelestai, John 19:30

Revelation 22:18

The warning that closes the book is also the warning that closes the canon. The formula echoes Deuteronomy 4:2. Do not add to what I command you, and do not take away from it. The bookending of Genesis through Revelation with the same protective formula is not accidental. The whole of Scripture is sealed by the same principle: this is complete, this is sufficient, this is the word of God and it is enough. The consequences named, plagues added to those who add, name removed from the book of life for those who subtract, are the most severe consequences available within the book's own framework. The severity is proportionate to the stakes. The Scriptures are the vehicle through which Thread 7's invitation reaches the world. Tampering with that vehicle tampers with the invitation itself. Thread 5 is in the closure: the dispensational roadmap is complete. What God revealed through Moses, the prophets, the apostles, and the Revelation of Jesus Christ is the whole testimony. No new dispensation follows. No new revelation supplements it. The oikonomia of Ephesians 1:10 has reached its administration in this book. Thread 4 is in the accountability: those who add or remove are making a genuine choice with genuine consequences.
The canon is closed with a warning, not as a frightening afterthought but as the appropriate seal on a completed revelation: what God has given is sufficient, and tampering with it in either direction carries the weight of the judgments described within it.
ἐάν τις ἐπιθῇ ἐπ᾽ αὐτά (ean tis epithē ep' auta): if any man shall add unto these things: epithē (aorist active subjunctive of epitithēmi, to place upon, to add to); the warning against addition mirrors the closing of the Law in Deuteronomy 4:2 and 12:32; the completed revelation is not to be supplemented by further claims of equal authority

Revelation 22:20

Surely I come quickly. The third declaration. Nai, yes, certainly, added to the certainty of erchomai tachu. The one who is the Alpha and Omega, the root and offspring of David, the bright and morning star, the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world: he is coming. John responds with the prayer that gathers every thread into one sentence: erchou, kurie Iēsou, come, Lord Jesus. The same erchou, the same come, that the Spirit spoke in verse 17. That verse invited the thirsty to come to him. This verse is John asking him to come to us. The invitation runs in both directions: the Lord says come to the thirsty; John says come to us, Lord. Thread 1 is in both movements: the God who cannot stop reaching reaches toward humanity in verse 17 and humanity reaches toward God in verse 20. The reaching is mutual and it is the whole story. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. The last sentence of the Bible. Not a doctrine, not a warning, not a vision: a benediction. Grace. Charis: the free, unmerited favor that underlies the entire invitation of verse 17, the entire work of the cross, the entire opening of the door. Meta pantōn, with all of you. The scope of the closing grace is the same as the scope of the opening love in John 3:16: all. The Bible began in a garden with God calling. It ends in a city with God coming. The story was never about a system or a program or a set of doctrines. It was about a Person seeking people, drawing them, building a people around them, moving through history toward a King, honoring the genuine choices they make, administering a plan none of them could see, hiding them in himself, opening the door to anyone who will come. The last word is grace. Amen.
Surely I come quickly, the third and final declaration; and John's response is the prayer of the whole canon: come, Lord Jesus; and the last word of the Bible is grace.
ναί ἔρχομαι ταχύ (nai erchomai tachu): surely I come quickly: nai (yes, certainly, truly, the strongest affirmation); erchomai tachu (I am coming quickly); the erchomai is present tense, the coming is already in motion; the certainty is absolute; this is the third and final I come quickly of chapter 22 (vv.7, 12, 20), each one a declaration from the Lord himself, each one answered by John's prayer · ἔρχου κύριε Ἰησοῦ (erchou kurie Iēsou): come, Lord Jesus: the same imperative erchou used in verse 17's invitation; now spoken by John as a prayer; the one who extended the invitation in verse 17 is the one prayed to here; the same word, the same Lord, the request and the invitation converging in the final prayer of the canon · ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ μετὰ πάντων (hē charis tou kuriou Iēsou meta pantōn): the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all: charis (grace, free favor, unmerited gift) + meta pantōn (with all, with everyone); the scope of the closing benediction is pantōn, all; the same grace that opened the invitation in verse 17 closes the canon; the last word of the Bible is grace
