Judges 2:1

Judges 1 is the audit of what Joshua left undone. Tribe by tribe, the record accumulates: did not drive out. Manasseh did not drive out. Ephraim did not drive out. Zebulun did not drive out. Asher did not drive out. Naphtali did not drive out. Dan could not drive out. The repeated phrase is the book's thesis statement: the incomplete obedience that Judges 1 documents is the root cause of the three hundred years of cycles that follow. And then the transition verse that sets the whole book in motion: another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD or the works he had done for Israel. The problem is transmission. The parents who experienced the Jordan crossing and the Jericho walls did not pass the story forward in a way that produced genuine knowledge, yada, the relational experiential knowing, in their children. Thread 4 is in the did not drive out: each tribe made genuine choices to accommodate rather than obey. The Canaanites were left in the land for forced labor, for economic advantage, for the path of least resistance. Thread 5 is the dispensational consequence: the conquest period has failed to reach its commanded completion, setting up the judge period as the consequence-administration.
They did not drive out. The repeated phrase across Judges 1 is the diagnosis for everything that follows; partial obedience to the covenant's terms produces the partial possession that Judges 2-21 will chronicle.
וְגֵם דּוֹר אַחֵר קָם אַחֲרֵיהֶם אֲשֶׁר לֹא יָדְעוּ אֶת יְהוָה (ve-gam dor acher qam achareihem asher lo yade'u et YHWH): another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD: lo yade'u (they did not know, Qal perfect of yada; the experiential relational knowing; not doctrinal ignorance about God's existence but the absence of the covenant relationship that comes from being taught the story; the generation gap in covenant transmission)

Judges 2:11

Judges 2:11-19 is the paradigm for the whole book, the eight-act cycle stated in its purest form before the narrative examples begin. The acts are precise and sequential: One: they did evil, vayyaasu et ha-ra. Genuine free choice. The Qal active shows Israel as the subject, the moral agent, the doer. Not compelled, not irresistibly determined. They did. Two: YHWH's anger burned, vayyichar af YHWH. Genuine divine emotion responding to genuine human choice. The anger is real, not theatrical. Three: he sold them, vayyimkor. Judicial divine action. He gave them over to the consequences their choices invited. Four: they cried out, vayyize'aqqu. Genuine prayer. Under the suffering they sought the one they had abandoned. Five: the LORD raised up judges, vayyaqem YHWH shofetim. Causative Hiphil: God caused someone to rise as deliverer. Genuine sovereignty responding to genuine prayer. Six: he delivered them, hoshiam. The deliverer delivered. Seven: and when the judge died, they returned and corrupted themselves, vayyashubu va-yashchitu. The cycle resets. They returned to worse than before. Thread 4 is in the genuine sin that begins each cycle: Israel's choices are theirs, and the consequences are proportionate. Thread 1 is in the genuine rescue that follows the genuine cry: the God who cannot stop reaching reaches into every cycle of human failure with a deliverer. Thread 5 is the dispensational diagnosis: seven cycles proving that the Mosaic administration cannot produce the heart-change the covenant requires. Hebrews 8:7 reads this correctly, if the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to seek a second.
The Judges cycle, eight sequential acts from genuine sin to genuine divine rescue to renewed genuine sin, is the grammar of the Mosaic dispensation's structural limitation; seven cycles prove the law cannot produce what it requires.
וַיַּעֲשׂוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה (vayyaasu venei Yisrael et ha-ra be-einei YHWH): the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: vayyaasu (they did, Qal wayyiqtol, the narrative past tense that describes genuine human action; the doing is theirs; they genuinely chose to serve the Baals; the wayyiqtol chains the acts causally: they did → YHWH's anger burned → he sold them; each link in the chain is a genuine cause producing a genuine effect) · וַיִּזְעֲקוּ... וַיָּקֶם יְהוָה שֹׁפְטִים (vayyize'aqqu... vayyaqem YHWH shofetim): and they cried out... and the LORD raised up judges: vayyize'aqqu (they cried out, Qal wayyiqtol of za'aq, to cry out in distress; genuine prayer under genuine suffering); vayyaqem (and he raised up, Hiphil wayyiqtol of qum, to rise; the causative Hiphil: YHWH caused to rise; genuine divine sovereignty responding to genuine human prayer)
