What happened at Rameses in the Bible?

Israel built this city as slaves, and it is the city they walked out of free. On the night the LORD struck Egypt, "the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children" (Exod 12:37). The going out began in the very place the bondage had been laid.
