What happened at Damascus in the Bible?

The road to this city is where the church's fiercest enemy became its greatest missionary. Saul, breathing threats, was stopped by a light and a voice: "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" (Acts 9:4). He went in blind and came out a new man.
