What happened at Bethlehem in the Bible?

The little town the prophet named seven centuries early: "thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth... that is to be ruler in Israel" (Micah 5:2). There the ruler was born, in the city of David (Luke 2:4).
