What happened at Bethany in the Bible?

The town just over the Mount of Olives where Jesus lodged, raised Lazarus, and spoke the words that empty every grave: "I am the resurrection, and the life" (John 11:25). From here, hands lifted in blessing, He ascended: "he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them" (Luke 24:50).
