What does propitiation mean?
The Position
Propitiation means the satisfaction of God's wrath. Christ's death fully satisfied the justice of God as a sufficient offering for the sin of the world. That offering is received through faith.
Romans 3:25
“Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood.”
Two things are happening in this verse. The propitiation is real and complete at the cross. And it is received through faith in his blood. Those are two different moments of the same transaction. The offering is the ground. Faith is the instrument.
Supporting Verses
John 3:36
“he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
The wrath abides on the unbeliever. Present tense. Continuous. Not removed and restored. Never lifted, because the propitiation was never received through faith.
John 3:18
“He that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed.”
Condemnation is for unbelief, not for an unpaid or missing provision.

“If the propitiation was made for everyone, why was anyone judged? You cannot punish the same sins twice.”

Christ did not clear individual accounts the way a bank processes transactions. He made a sufficient offering for the sin of the world. The historic formula of the church, held long before Calvin: sufficient for all, efficient for those who believe. Romans 3:25 already tells you the order. Propitiation through faith in his blood. The cross is the ground. Faith is the instrument. The wrath never lifted because the instrument was never applied.
