What does election mean?
The Position
Election in the Bible is corporate and in Christ, not a pre-creation list of individually named souls. God chose a people in Christ before the foundation of the world. Anyone who is in Christ by faith is among the elect. The address of election is Christ himself.
Ephesians 1:4
“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world.”
The two most important words are 'in him.' The election is located in Christ. It is not a list of names drawn up before creation. It is a position, in Christ, available to anyone who believes. Whoever believes is in him. Whoever is in him is chosen. The Greek of Ephesians 1:13 settles the entry point. Pisteusantes esphragisthete. Having believed, you were sealed. Both aorist. Both decisive. The individual enters what is located in Christ at the moment of faith, not before it.

John 3:16
“whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Whosoever believes. Not whosoever is on a pre-selected list. Whosoever believes is in him, and being in him is what election means.
Romans 10:13
“whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Not whosoever is pre-selected. Whosoever calls. The door is genuinely open.

Romans 9 is about God's covenant purposes running through Israel as a nation, not about individual souls pre-selected for heaven or hell. The election language of Ephesians 1:4 is corporate and positional: in him. Anyone in him is elect. The question is not whether God is sovereign. He is. The question is whether the door into Christ is genuinely open to all. Romans 10:13 says it is: whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Not whosoever is pre-selected. Whosoever calls.
