The Rock Nobody Can Make
Granite is the floor under every continent, and four thousand years after God asked Job about it we still cannot say where it came from
You are standing on it right now, or near enough. Under the soil, under the sediment, under the road and the foundation of your house, the continents are made of granite. It is the basement rock of every landmass on earth. Wherever the crust rises above the sea, granite is what holds it up.
And no one has ever made any.
I do not mean that as a figure of speech. Take granite, melt it in a furnace, let it cool, and you do not get granite back. The thing that makes granite what it is, those big interlocking crystals of quartz and feldspar and mica you can see with your naked eye on any kitchen counter, does not return. The most common continental rock on earth, under every city and farm and church building on every continent, and we cannot produce a piece of it.
Brown's Answer
Walt Brown spent forty years on that problem, and his answer is the one I find most satisfying.
Brown was an MIT-trained engineer with an earned doctorate, a former evolutionist, and a man who spent his career inviting anyone in the world to try to knock his work down. He published his telephone number. He answered his critics personally for decades. He died in 2025 having never withdrawn the invitation. That is not the posture of a man running a con, and it is worth saying plainly in an age when creationists are assumed to be hiding from scrutiny.
His conclusion about granite is the one the textbooks have no category for: granite is not something the earth manufactured. It is what the earth was made with.
In Brown's model, before the flood there was a shell of pressurized water roughly ten miles beneath the surface, and the crust sitting on top of that water was granite, with basalt beneath it. Granite is the original crust. The created floor. Everything else in earth history happens on top of it or after it. The continents are not a slow accumulation of process. They are a foundation, laid, with a world built on top.
That is a fundamentally different claim from the one you were taught, and notice it is not a smaller claim. It says the reason nobody can manufacture granite is that granite was never manufactured. It was made.
Why the Furnace Fails
Here is what you will be told, and it is stated with great confidence. The standard account says granite and rhyolite are the same rock cooled at different speeds, granite slowly at depth under enormous pressure over hundreds of thousands of years, rhyolite fast at the surface. On that telling, you cannot make granite in a laboratory because you cannot fit five miles of overburden and a million years into a crucible.
Fair enough as far as it goes. But notice what has just happened. The explanation for why the process cannot be demonstrated is that the process cannot be demonstrated. Nobody has watched granite form. Nobody has produced any. The model is reasoned backward from the rock, and the honest word for a mechanism that has never been reproduced and never been observed is not fact. It is hypothesis. It may be told to you in a confident voice, but confidence is not the same thing as evidence, and you are permitted to notice the difference.
Robert Gentry put the challenge in a form nobody has been able to answer: synthesize a hand-sized piece of granite containing a single polonium halo, and he would consider his position falsified. That challenge has stood for decades.
The Three-Minute Problem
Which brings us to the halos, and to the most striking physical detail in this whole subject.
A radiohalo is a microscopic sphere of discoloration left inside a crystal by radioactive decay, and the radius of each ring identifies the isotope that made it. Gentry found halos from polonium 218 in biotite mica inside granites all over the world, in enormous numbers, frequently with no uranium halos accompanying them, which is what you would expect if the polonium had no decaying parent.
The half-life of polonium 218 is three minutes and three seconds.
Sit with what that requires. A halo cannot form in liquid rock, because there is no crystal lattice to damage. The polonium must be sitting inside solid crystal while it decays. And within about three minutes, essentially all of it is gone. So the rock had to be solid, with the polonium already inside it, in a window of minutes. Not a million years. Minutes.
Creation scientists are still refining the exact mechanism, which is what serious researchers do with a live question. Gentry reads the halos as fingerprints of fiat creation, rock that was solid from the first instant. Andrew Snelling has explored whether hydrothermal fluids could have carried polonium into place during the flood year. They are working on the same side of the same problem. What neither of them disputes, and what nobody has explained away, is the anomaly itself: there is something sitting in the foundation rock of every continent that the slow-and-gradual story does not account for.
The confident version of earth history has a three-minute hole in it, and it is located in the floor.
Where Wast Thou
At the end of Job, after thirty-seven chapters of men who were certain they had God figured out, God finally speaks. The first thing out of His mouth is not an explanation. It is a question.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof? (Job 38:4–6).
Read that with a piece of granite in your hand.
God is not bullying Job. He is doing something far more interesting. He is pointing at the floor and asking a question Job cannot answer, and here is what should stop you: four thousand years later, with electron microscopes and mass spectrometers and every furnace we can build, we still cannot answer it either. We cannot make the rock. We have never watched it form. We cannot fully account for what is sitting inside it. God asked a man where he was when the foundations were laid, and the human race has been standing on those foundations ever since, still unable to say.
That is not a gap God is hiding in. It is a fact about scale. The question was never meant to be answered by us. It was meant to locate us.
What Creation Is Actually For
Here is where I want to turn, because a lot of creation apologetics stops one step short.
The evidence is not primarily ammunition. Paul says the invisible things of God from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, so that men are without excuse (Romans 1:20). Look at what creation does in that sentence. It does not win an argument. It removes an excuse. It is a witness standing in the rock and the sky, testifying whether anyone calls it to the stand or not.
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth his handywork (Psalm 19:1). Day unto day uttereth speech. It has never once stopped talking. It was talking to Job and it is talking under your feet right now.
So when I read about polonium halos and interlocked quartz crystals, I am not mainly collecting debate points. I am listening to a witness. And what the witness keeps saying, in a hundred registers, is that this world did not talk itself into existence, that the foundation was laid by Someone, and that the Someone is not obliged to explain Himself to the creatures standing on His floor.
The Maker Came Down
And now the thing that makes this more than geology.
The One who laid those foundations has a name, and the New Testament gives it without hedging. For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible... all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist (Colossians 1:16–17). The hand that laid the cornerstone of the earth is the hand that was nailed to a cross.
Sit with that. The Maker of the granite came down and stood on it. He walked on rock He had spoken into being. He was laid in a tomb cut out of it. And He came out, because the One who laid the foundations of the earth is not going to be held by a hole in a hillside.
That is the God you are dealing with. Not a distant architect who set it spinning and lost interest. The Creator who came looking for two people hiding in a garden. Who put a ram in a thicket on a mountain. Who took on flesh and let the world He made kill Him, so that people who cannot explain a rock could be forgiven and brought home.
So Look Down, and Then Look Up
Here is the exhortation, and I mean it plainly.
Stop being embarrassed. There is a kind of Christian who has quietly accepted that faith is what you have left over after the science is done with you, who talks about Genesis the way you talk about a relative's opinions at Thanksgiving. That posture is not humility. It is surrender to a confidence the evidence does not support. Nobody has made granite. Nobody watched the continents form. The account you were handed as settled fact has open questions in it that specialists argue about in their own journals. You are allowed to say so, kindly and without swagger, and to go on believing that God laid the foundations because He said He did.
And do not stop at unembarrassed, because that is only half of it. The right response to creation was never merely to win the argument about it. It was to worship. Go outside tonight and look up, then remember what is under your feet, and let both of them do what they were made to do. The rock and the sky have been preaching the same sermon since day one, and it is not a lecture. It is a summons.
Because the God who laid the foundations of the earth is the God who came to find you, and He has never stopped. He asked Job where he was. He asked Adam the same thing in the garden, and He knew that answer too. He is still asking, and not to shame you. He asks because He wants you back.
The foundation was laid before you existed. The cross was raised before you asked. And the invitation still stands, open to anyone who will have it: And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely (Revelation 22:17).
Come to the One who made the rock you are standing on. He has been waiting for you since before there was anything to stand on at all.
