The Laver of Mirrors

“For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.”James 1:24 · KJV

Between the altar and the tent stood a bronze basin where the priests washed their hands and feet before they served. Scripture pauses to tell you what it was made of: “the lookingglasses of the women” (Exod 38:8), the polished bronze mirrors they gave up.

You saw your own face in the metal, and then in the water you washed in. The basin that cleansed was made of the thing that shows you yourself. James makes the same picture: the Word is “a glass,” and the man who hears and does not obey is “like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass” who forgets what he saw (Jas 1:23-24). The mirror and the washing are one object. You cannot be cleansed by a Word you will not look into.
