The LORD shut him in. Noah's safety inside the ark rested on God's hand upon the door, not on Noah's own grip — a picture of the believer sealed within Christ and secured by Someone stronger than himself.

Psalms 97:10John 10:281 Peter 1:5
Psalms 89:30-34secondary

When His children forsake His law He visits their sin with the rod — yet 'my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him.' God chastens His own; He does not disown them.

If a believer breaks God's law, hasn't he broken the covenant and lost his standing?

The very text that names the rod for sin answers it: God will visit their transgression with stripes, but He will not take away His lovingkindness nor break His covenant. The discipline proves sonship rather than ending it (Hebrews 12:6).

Hebrews 12:62 Timothy 2:13Jeremiah 32:40
Psalms 121:7-8secondary

The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul... from this time forth, and even for evermore. The keeping is total and dated to no end — it reaches the soul itself and runs on past this life into forever.

Luke 15:4John 6:39John 10:28
Matthew 24:13tertiary

He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. The endurance Christ names is the mark of those God preserves through the tribulation, not a probation the believer funds to keep his soul.

Doesn't final salvation hang on my own endurance to the end?

In context this is deliverance through the great tribulation, and even there endurance is the evidence of genuine life God sustains, not its price. The same Lord promises His sheep 'shall never perish' with no clause attached (John 10:28).

1 John 2:19Philippians 1:6John 10:28

John 10:28-29anchor

I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. The sheep are held in the Son's hand and the Father's hand at once, and the Father is greater than all.

Even if no one else can pluck me out, couldn't I jump out of His hand myself?

The promise is 'they shall never perish,' stated without exception, and 'any man' leaves no one — including the believer — able to break the grip; the sheep are the Father's gift to the Son, and the greater-than-all Father will not surrender them.

John 6:39Romans 8:38-39John 17:12Chuck Smith
John 15:6secondary

The branch cast forth and burned pictures the unfruitful professor's loss of usefulness and the chastening of empty religion — not a true believer severed from life. Abiding is the fellowship in which fruit grows, while Christ Himself keeps the branches the Father gave Him.

Doesn't a branch being cut off and burned mean a saved person can be cut off from Christ and lost?

The burning here is loss of fruitful service and the exposure of fruitless profession, not the loss of eternal life — the fire in this figure consumes worthless works, as Paul says the man himself is still saved though his work burns (1 Corinthians 3:15). And the sheep in this same Gospel 'shall never perish' (John 10:28). Abiding is the walk of fellowship, not the tenure of sonship.

John 10:28-291 Corinthians 3:15John 13:10
John 17:11-12primary

Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me... none of them is lost, but the son of perdition. Christ keeps every one the Father gave; the one exception was never among them.

But Judas was lost — doesn't that prove one of Christ's own can fall away?

Judas is called the son of perdition, singled out precisely as the one who did not belong, 'that the scripture might be fulfilled.' He is the exception that shows the kept ones remain kept, never an example of a true believer lost.

1 Thessalonians 5:24Philippians 1:62 Timothy 2:13
1 Corinthians 3:15primary

If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. Scripture distinguishes lost reward from lost salvation — the man's work may burn while the man himself is kept.

1 Corinthians 3:13-142 John 1:8Hebrews 10:35
1 Corinthians 9:27tertiary

Lest that by any means... I myself should be a castaway. Paul disciplines himself not to keep his soul but to keep from disqualification for the prize.

If even Paul feared being a castaway, can't a believer lose his salvation?

'Castaway' here is adokimos, disapproved for the reward — the incorruptible crown of the surrounding verses, not sonship. Paul feared losing his prize and his usefulness, never his place in Christ, which he elsewhere calls inseparable (Romans 8:39).

Galatians

Galatians 5:4secondary

Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. To turn back to law-keeping is to fall away from the principle of grace as one's standing — not to lose one's place in the family.

Doesn't 'fallen from grace' prove that salvation itself can be lost?

The whole letter argues that justification is by faith apart from works. To fall from grace here is to abandon grace as the method of standing and slip into legalism, a fall from a way of living before God, not from sonship, which Paul roots in faith and adoption (Galatians 3:26, 4:6).

Galatians 2:16Galatians 3:3Galatians 4:6

Ephesians

Ephesians 1:13-14anchor

After that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption. At the moment of belief the Spirit seals the believer as God's guaranteed possession.

2 Corinthians 1:22Ephesians 4:302 Timothy 2:19
Ephesians 4:30primary

Grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Even a grieved Spirit remains a sealing Spirit, and the seal runs all the way to the day of redemption.

If a believer grieves the Spirit by sin, doesn't that break the seal?

The verse itself sets the term of the seal: 'unto the day of redemption.' It stands over the grieving, not against it. Grieving the Spirit is serious and costly, but the text guarantees the seal holds to the end.

Colossians

Colossians 1:21-23secondary

To present you holy... if ye continue in the faith grounded and settled. Continuance in the faith is the visible mark of those genuinely reconciled, not the payment that keeps reconciliation in force.

'If ye continue' seems to make final salvation conditional on my own perseverance.

The 'if' describes the fruit of real faith, which perseveres because God performs the work. The same Paul who writes this says God will finish what He began (Philippians 1:6) and that nothing separates the believer from Christ's love (Romans 8:39). Continuance is the evidence, not the leverage.

Hebrews

Hebrews 6:4-6secondary

The severe warning is against forfeiting maturity and reward by drifting back, an impossible re-laying of a foundation already laid once for all. It never says the sealed believer loses eternal life; the chapter turns at once to a hope 'sure and stedfast.'

Doesn't this passage say a saved person can fall away and never be restored, meaning salvation is lost?

The impossibility is of renewing them again unto repentance by re-crucifying Christ — a foundation laid once cannot be relaid. The loss in view is fruitfulness and reward for the professor who shrinks back, and the writer immediately grounds the reader in an anchor of the soul both sure and stedfast (Hebrews 6:17-19). Warning of loss of blessing is not the loss of eternal life.

Hebrews 6:17-19primary

Hebrews 10:10Hebrews 7:25Hebrews 9:12
Hebrews 10:26-29secondary

The warning against willful sin threatens fearful chastening and forfeited confidence for the one who tramples what he professed — while verse 14 still stands that the offering perfects them for ever. The Lord judges 'his people' as His own, not as the disinherited.

Doesn't 'no more sacrifice for sins' mean a believer who sins willfully loses his salvation?

There is no additional sacrifice because Christ's one offering already perfected the sanctified for ever (v.14); to reject it is to have nowhere else to turn. The passage warns of severe divine discipline and lost reward, and verse 30 has the Lord judging 'his people' — language of ownership, not abandonment.

2 Peter 2:20-22secondary

The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. These were cleaned on the outside yet never changed in nature — their return to filth exposes what they always were.

Don't these apostates who 'escaped the pollutions of the world' prove that saved people can lose salvation?

Peter names them by nature — a dog and a sow — animals washed but never made new. They knew the way of righteousness and turned from it, but the return to type shows they were never regenerate. Scripture accounts for this exactly: 'they went out from us, but they were not of us' (1 John 2:19).

Revelation

Revelation 3:5secondary

He that overcometh... I will not blot out his name out of the book of life. The promise is an emphatic guarantee of retention to the overcomer, which Scripture defines as every believer.

Doesn't 'I will not blot out his name' imply that some names do get blotted out?

The verse is a promise, not a threat. Christ pledges that He will never erase the overcomer's name — and 'who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God' (1 John 5:5). The statement guarantees the believer's name stays; it does not hang his salvation over a trap door.
