The Pierced One
Zechariah 12:10 is one of the most precise prophetic texts in the entire OT. God speaks in the first person: 'they will look on me, on him whom they have pierced.' The speaker is God. The one being mourned is the pierced one. The identity of the two is the theological center of the text, and the center of John's use of it at the crucifixion. John is standing at the cross when the soldier drives his spear into Jesus's side. John knows which text this is. And Zechariah 13:1 immediately follows: 'On that day there shall be a fountain opened.' The wound that is mourned opens the source of cleansing. The piercing and the fountain are one continuous movement.
