The Golden Chain
Romans 8:29-30 is the chain every serious theology of election must account for. Those whom he foreknew he also predestined: proegno before proOrisen. The order is not accidental. God foreknew persons before he predestined them. Prognosis in the NT means genuine prior knowledge of what will occur, not foreordination. Peter uses kata prognosin in 1 Peter 1:2 for election according to foreknowledge, confirming the distinction. The Calvinist reading collapses foreknowledge into foreordination, making proegno mean the same thing as proOrisen. But Paul uses two different words in deliberate sequence. The order is the argument. God knew before he ordained. The sovereignty is real. The foreknowledge is real. And the order matters.
