Goodness and Severity
Romans 11:22 is one of the most direct warnings in Paul's letters: addressed to Gentile believers about the real possibility of being cut off. The olive tree image describes both Jewish branches cut off through unbelief and Gentile branches grafted in through faith. Paul's warning to the Gentile branches, 'if you do not continue in his goodness, you also will be cut off', is not rhetorical decoration. It is a genuine warning about a genuine possibility. The same branches that were grafted in can be removed.
