The Fear of the Lord Is the Beginning
Proverbs 1:7 is the organizing principle of the entire wisdom tradition: the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Wisdom is not an innate capacity distributed to some and withheld from others. It is a response to the God who invites. The book of Proverbs is structured as conversations: not monologues. Wisdom calls from the highest places, from the street corners, from the city gates. She is not hidden. She is not available only to the pre-selected. Thread 4: wisdom is a choice, and Proverbs makes the invitation and the warning explicit.
