The Hearing Chain in a Corporate Key
The most important moment in Nehemiah is not the completion of the wall. It is what happens after. Ezra brings out the Torah. He reads it to the assembled community: men, women, and all who could understand. They stand. They listen for hours. When Ezra blesses the Lord, all the people answer: Amen, Amen. They bow their faces to the ground. Then hearing the law, they weep. The gap between the covenant they were supposed to have and the life they had lived is suddenly visible. And Nehemiah says something almost shocking in its tenderness: Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. The hearing chain in a corporate key: a whole people hearing the word and genuinely responding.
