The Counsel of God Rejected
Luke 7:30 is one of the most precisely worded anti-Calvinist statements in the NT, and one of the most neglected. The Pharisees and lawyers 'rejected the counsel of God against themselves.' Three elements: (1) God had a counsel (a saving purpose) for these men. (2) They rejected it. (3) They rejected it against themselves: the rejection was self-directed and self-damaging. If Calvinist unconditional election is correct, these men were never elected, God had no saving counsel for them, and they cannot be said to have rejected what was never offered. The text permits no such reading.
