The Day of Atonement
Leviticus 16 is the theological center of the entire Levitical system: the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur. Two goats are required: one is sacrificed, its blood sprinkled on the mercy seat inside the Holy of Holies. The other (the scapegoat) has the sins of all Israel confessed over it and is sent away into the wilderness. Both are necessary to the full picture. The sacrifice covers: the blood satisfies the justice of God. The scapegoat removes: the sins are carried away and separated from the people. Hebrews sees both in Christ.
