Choose This Day
Joshua 24 is the covenant renewal at Shechem: the last great act of Joshua's leadership. And the theological center is a command: choose this day whom you will serve. Joshua does not say: you will serve whoever you were predestined to serve. He lays out real alternatives: the gods your fathers served, the gods of the Amorites, or the LORD. And then he makes his own public declaration: as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. The text assumes that the choice is real, that the alternatives are genuine, and that the community's response will determine what follows.
