Ye Will Not Come: The Refused Invitation
John 5:40 is Christ's direct indictment: 'ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.' The Calvinist must say these men lacked irresistible grace, therefore they could not come. Christ says something different: they would not come. The distinction is between inability and unwillingness. Christ places the reason for their lostness in their own will, not in God's withholding of grace.
