Does Job Fear God for No Reason?
Job 1 opens with the most important theological question in the wisdom literature: Does Job fear God for no reason? The Accuser's challenge is not merely to Job's character: it is to the nature of genuine faith itself. Is it possible to genuinely love and fear God for who He is rather than for what He gives? The entire book of Job turns on this question. And the answer the book returns is: yes. Genuine, disinterested faith is possible. Thread 4: the dignity of the real response includes the possibility of loving God genuinely, not transactionally.
