Faith Without Works Is Dead
James 2 is the most misread chapter in the NT in the justification debate. James is not attacking Paul's doctrine of faith. He is attacking a counterfeit version of it. His question: 'can that faith save him?': refers to a faith that is verbal claim without transformative reality. Thread 4: genuine faith is genuine. It is not the kind of faith that leaves no trace in how a person lives. The Abraham and Rahab examples both demonstrate faith expressed through concrete action. James's he'emin (the same Hiphil of aman that Genesis 15:6 uses for Abraham) is always active, always the person's own.
