How Shall I Give Thee Up?
Hosea 11 is the most emotionally concentrated portrait of God in the Hebrew prophets. God speaks as a parent: I taught Ephraim to walk, I took them up in my arms, I bent down and fed them. And then comes the question that Thread 1 traces across the entire canon: How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? The Hebrew nehaph (my heart is turned within me) describes an interior upheaval of compassion. God is not a detached sovereign executing pre-programmed outcomes. His heart turns within Him over people who have rejected Him.
