The Warnings Are Real
Hebrews 6 contains the most severe warning in the NT, and it must be read without softening. The person described is not someone who attended church and remained unconverted. The description is specific: once enlightened, tasted the heavenly gift, shared in the Holy Spirit, tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come. These are not descriptions of outward religious participation. They are descriptions of genuine spiritual experience. And then have fallen away: the falling away is from something real. Both standard escapes ('they were never really saved' and 'this is purely hypothetical') require more interpretive work than the text invites.
