Return and Renewal
Ezra opens with a decree from Cyrus, King of Persia: a pagan ruler who does not know the God of Israel. And yet the first verse says: the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus. The sovereignty is not limited to the covenant community. It operates through the ordinary mechanisms of imperial administration. A king signs a decree. Fifty thousand Jews begin the journey home. The return is the Deuteronomy 30 promise beginning to unfold: when you return to the Lord your God, he will gather you again from all the peoples where he has scattered you.
