The Name of God
Exodus 34 is the theological foundation of Thread 1 across the entire canon. Israel has just committed the worst act in their covenant history: the golden calf. God descends in the cloud, and what comes out of his mouth is not judgment first. It is his name. The thirteen attributes deserve attention in Hebrew because the English flattens them. Racham (translated merciful) comes from the root rechem, the womb. It is womb-love: the love a mother has for the child she has carried inside her. Chanan (gracious) is the giving of unearned favor with no expectation of return. Erek appayim (longsuffering) literally means long of nostrils, the picture of steady breathing under provocation. Rav chesed (abundant in goodness and truth) rav means great, much; chesed is covenant loyalty that will not let go. These are not abstractions. They are the name God chooses for himself at the moment of Israel's greatest failure. This name echoes through Nehemiah 9, Psalms 86 and 103, Joel 2, Jonah 4, and Micah 7. The entire prophetic tradition of divine patience is rooted in this moment.
