Exodus 31:1

Exodus 25:8 is where Thread 6 is born in its OT form. Let them make me a sanctuary: ve-shakhanti betokham, and I will shakan among them. The command to build and the promise to dwell are joined by the same verse. The building is Israel's act; the dwelling is God's response to the building. Both are necessary. Neither replaces the other. Betokham, among them. God does not say he will dwell above them, watching from a distance. He says in their midst. At the center of the camp. The Tabernacle's physical placement in the center of the twelve-tribe encampment (Numbers 2) enacts this theologically: God is not at the edge of Israel's life but at its center. The pattern, tavnit, is the word Hebrews 8:5 will pick up: the earthly tabernacle is built according to the pattern shown on the mountain, which is itself a shadow and copy of the heavenly realities. The earthly Tabernacle is not the original. It is the shadow. The original is in heaven. The earthly copy is the best human hands can do with divine specifications, and it points beyond itself to the eternal dwelling that Revelation 21:3 will describe. Thread 6 is the command and the promise of this verse, the origin point of the shakan trajectory. Thread 5 is the Mosaic administration receiving its central institution. Thread 2 is the community that builds and around which God dwells, the corporate covenant people taking up their priestly role at the center of whose life God himself will live.
Let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them, veShakhanti betokham, the explicit command from which the entire Tabernacle thread takes its name; God does not come to visit; he comes to dwell.
וְעָשׂוּ לִי מִקְדָּשׁ וְשָׁכַנְתִּי בְּתוֹכָם (ve-asu li miqdash ve-shakhanti betokham): let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them: miqdash (sanctuary, holy place, from qadash, holy; the place set apart for the holy God); ve-shakhanti (and I will shakan, Qal perfect with waw consecutive; the dwelling is God's own act in response to the building; the sanctuary is built; God shanakhs); betokham (among them, not above them, not before them; among them, in their midst, at the center of the camp) · כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי מַרְאֶה אוֹתְךָ אֵת תַּבְנִית הַמִּשְׁכָּן (ke-khol asher ani mareh otkha et tavnit ha-Mishkan): according to all that I show thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle: tavnit (pattern, model, design, the Tabernacle is built to a pattern shown on the mountain; Hebrews 8:5 calls this pattern the shadow and copy of the heavenly realities; the earthly structure points toward the heavenly original)
