Commentary on Exodus 15

Whosoever Will · the Seven Threads Commentary

Exodus 15:1

The LORD goes before them: not behind, not above at a distance, but in front, leading. Cloud by day to guide; fire by night to give light. He did not take these away from before the people. The pillar of cloud and fire is the visible Shekinah presence: the kavod traveling with Israel before it settles in the Tabernacle. Thread 6 is in the pillar: the same presence that commanded the Tabernacle to be built (Exodus 25:8, that I may shakan among them) is already living among them before the Tabernacle exists. God does not wait for the structure to be built before he shows up. He shows up and then commands the structure. The Tabernacle will be built to house what is already present. The crossing of the Red Sea is the event that defines Israel's identity for the rest of the OT. Paul calls it a baptism, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea (1 Corinthians 10:2). The people see the great work the LORD did against Egypt. They fear the LORD. They believe: vayyaaminu, the he'emin word, the same root as emunah and aman, in the LORD and in Moses his servant. Thread 4 is in the believing: the response to the visible act of deliverance is genuine faith.
He took not away the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night, the presence that delivered them is the presence that leads them; the same glory that will fill the Tabernacle in Exodus 40 is walking in front of them now.
עַמּוּד עָנָן לָלֶכֶת יוֹמָם וְעַמּוּד אֵשׁ לְהָאִיר לָהֶם לָלֶכֶת יוֹמָם וָלָיְלָה (ammud anan lalekhet yomam ve-ammud esh leha'ir lahem lalekhet yomam va-laila): a pillar of cloud to lead them by day and a pillar of fire to give them light by night: ammud (pillar, column, the same word as the pillar/column of a building; a structural, visible, solid presence); anan (cloud, the cloud of divine presence that will settle on the Tabernacle in Exodus 40); esh (fire, the fire of divine holiness that burns without consuming as at the burning bush)

Exodus 15:15

Exodus 15:22

Three days after the Song of Moses, after the LORD is my strength and song and salvation, after the horse and rider thrown into the sea, the people cannot find water and they murmur against Moses. The speed of the transition is the whole point. This is not a different people than the ones who believed and sang. It is the same people, now in different circumstances, responding with complaint rather than trust. Thread 4 is in the murmuring: the same genuine human agency that produced the believing at the sea produces the murmuring at Marah. Both responses are genuinely theirs. The wilderness becomes the test that reveals whether the faith at the sea was emunah, the steadfast covenant trust that holds when circumstances change, or merely a momentary response to a spectacular event. Thread 1 is in Moses crying to the LORD and the LORD showing him the tree. God does not abandon the murmurers. He provides. The tree that sweetens the bitter water is another type reaching forward, the wood that transforms what is bitter into what sustains life.
Three days out of the greatest miracle in their history and they are murmuring. The wilderness testing begins immediately and the pattern of Hebrews 3:7-19 is already established: the same people who believed at the sea complain at Marah.
וַיִּלֹּנּוּ הָעָם עַל מֹשֶׁה (vayyillonu ha-am al Moshe): the people murmured against Moses: lun/lun (to murmur, grumble, lodge a complaint, the wilderness murmuring verb that will appear fourteen times in Exodus and Numbers; the wayyiqtol form describes the murmuring as the immediate next act after the failure to find water; three days from the crossing of the sea, the grumbling begins)
