Dead in Sin, Alive in Christ
Ephesians 2:8-9 is the most succinct statement of salvation by grace in the NT. Every phrase is load-bearing. By grace: the source is entirely God's unmerited favor. Through faith: the instrument is genuine trust. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. The gift of God refers to the salvation package (the by grace you have been saved) not specifically to the faith through which it is received. Faith is the instrument. Grace is the gift. Paul is not saying faith is irresistibly produced. He is saying salvation cannot be earned.
