Choose Life
Deuteronomy 30:19 is the single most direct refutation of theological determinism in the Torah. Moses has just finished the entire covenant renewal: the blessings, the curses, the history of Israel's wandering. And he closes with this: I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Therefore choose life. The command is given to people who can obey or refuse. If the choice is predetermined, the command is meaningless theater. The text does not allow that reading. Both paths are genuinely before Israel. The imperative chooses life: commanding a response that the text assumes is genuinely possible.
