Solomon's Prayer for Foreigners
Solomon's temple dedication prayer in 1 Kings 8 contains one of the most remarkable passages in the OT: an explicit, extended petition for foreigners who come to pray at the temple. Verses 41-43 name the foreigner who is not of your people Israel, and ask God to respond to them so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name. Thread 7: the universal scope is embedded in the dedication of the building Israel would most naturally treat as exclusively theirs. Thread 1: the reaching God builds a house that was always meant to reach beyond one people.
