The Propitiation for the Whole World
1 John 2:2 is the NT's clearest statement of unlimited atonement. Christ is the propitiation 'not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.' The Calvinist must make 'the whole world' mean something other than the whole world: typically 'the elect from all nations.' But John has already used 'ours' to refer to the believing community. 'The whole world' is the explicit contrast to 'ours.' It means everyone outside the believing community: the entire rest of humanity.
