Who is the antichrist?
The antichrist is a coming world ruler, "that man of sin... the son of perdition" (2 Thess 2:3), who confirms a covenant with Israel, breaks it at the tribulation's midpoint, and demands worship, before Christ destroys him at His coming.
What the text states
He is a person, not a system: "that man of sin be revealed" (2 Thess 2:3), "the prince that shall come" (Dan 9:26), "the beast" (Rev 13). He rises to power in the tribulation, makes a seven-year covenant with many (Dan 9:27), sits "in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God" (2 Thess 2:4), and enforces the mark of the beast (Rev 13:16-17). He is empowered by Satan and destroyed "with the brightness of his coming" (2 Thess 2:8). John also warns that "many antichrists" (1 John 2:18) prefigure him in every age.
Historicists identify the antichrist with the papacy or past rulers; preterists with Nero. We hold he is a future individual, because 2 Thessalonians 2 places his destruction at Christ's coming, which has not occurred, and Daniel's covenant with Israel has never been made.
