Where was Jesus between His death and resurrection? Did Jesus go to hell?
His body was in the tomb; His spirit was with the Father. He told the thief, "To day shalt thou be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43). He did not suffer in hell to finish the atonement; that was finished on the cross.
What the text states
The atonement was completed at the cross, "It is finished" (John 19:30), so nothing remained to pay in hell. That day Jesus was in paradise with the thief (Luke 23:43) and committed His spirit to the Father (23:46). "He descended into hell" (a later creed) rests mainly on 1 Peter 3:19, "preached unto the spirits in prison," best read as a proclamation of victory, and Ephesians 4:9's "lower parts of the earth" (the grave). No further punishment; His spirit was with the Father, and He rose the third day.
Some teach Christ suffered in hell three days to finish the atonement. We reject this: the cross finished it, and Jesus was in paradise, not torment.

Wave 4. 50 quoted fragments table-passed against the verses table, splitting every quotation at its ellipsis. 49 pass. ONE CORRECTION: the file quoted "Dead in sins" (Eph 2:1); the KJV reads "dead in trespasses and sins", and the quotation was corrected to the table.
