Where is the stone rolled away in the Bible?
Whosoever WillAll Whosoever Will answers →
In all four Gospels. Matthew 28:2 tells how the angel rolled it back; Mark 16:3-4 gives the women's question and the stone already moved; Luke 24:2 and John 20:1 record that they found it gone. "And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great" (Mark 16:4).
What the text states
The stone is set in place at the burial: Joseph of Arimathaea "rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre" (Matthew 27:60), as Mark also records (15:46), and the sepulchre was made sure, "sealing the stone, and setting a watch" (Matthew 27:66). On the first day of the week every Gospel finds it moved. Matthew records the angel who "rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it" (28:2). Mark gives the women''s question, "Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?" (16:3), and the reason they asked, "for it was very great" (16:4). Luke: "they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre" (24:2). John: Mary Magdalene "seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre" (20:1).
