What is the millennium? Is the thousand-year reign literal?
The millennium is the literal thousand-year reign of Christ on earth after His second coming, promised to David's throne and centered in Jerusalem. Revelation 20 names the thousand years six times.
What the text states
After the second coming, Satan is bound "a thousand years" (Rev 20:2), and the martyrs "lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years" (20:4). It is the kingdom the Old Testament prophets described: the wolf with the lamb (Isa 11:6), swords into plowshares (Isa 2:4), Christ on David's throne (Luke 1:32-33) ruling from Jerusalem (Zech 14:9). It fulfills the unconditional covenants to Abraham (the land) and David (the throne) that history has not yet fulfilled. At its end Satan is loosed, the last rebellion crushed, and the Great White Throne judgment held (Rev 20:7-15).
Amillennialism reads the thousand years as symbolic of the present church age, with Christ reigning spiritually now; postmillennialism as a golden age the church brings in before Christ returns. We hold premillennialism: Christ returns first, then reigns a literal thousand years, because Revelation 20 places the reign after His coming (19:11-21) and the number is stated six times.
