What happens to believers who die before the rapture?
They are with the Lord immediately, "absent from the body... present with the Lord" (2 Cor 5:8), and their bodies rise first at the rapture: "the dead in Christ shall rise first" (1 Thess 4:16). The soul is with Christ now; the body is raised then.
What the text states
Death for the believer is departing "to be with Christ; which is far better" (Phil 1:23). The soul goes to be with the Lord at once; there is no soul sleep and no purgatory. At the rapture the bodies of these believers are raised and glorified before the living are changed (1 Thess 4:16-17). Paul comforts the Thessalonians precisely so they will "sorrow not, even as others which have no hope" (4:13): their dead in Christ have lost nothing and will rise first.
Soul sleep (held by some groups) says the dead are unconscious until the resurrection. We hold the New Testament teaches conscious presence with Christ at death (Luke 23:43, 2 Cor 5:8, Phil 1:23), with bodily resurrection still future.
