What happens after death? Is there life after death?
Yes. At death the believer's soul goes at once to be with Christ, "absent from the body... present with the Lord" (2 Cor 5:8); the unbeliever's to conscious separation (Luke 16:22-23), awaiting the resurrection of the body and final judgment.
What the text states
Death is not the end and not unconsciousness. The believer departs "to be with Christ; which is far better" (Phil 1:23); the rich man in Luke 16 is conscious in torment, Lazarus comforted. This intermediate state precedes the resurrection: believers raised at the rapture (1 Thess 4:16), the lost at the Great White Throne (Rev 20). The hope is not a disembodied heaven but resurrection on a new earth (Rev 21). Destiny is settled at death by whether Christ was received in life.
Soul sleep holds the dead unconscious until resurrection; annihilationism, that the lost cease. We hold conscious existence after death, with Christ or apart from Him, and eternal destinies at the two resurrections.
