What does the Bible say about money and wealth?
Money is not evil; "the love of money is the root of all evil" (1 Tim 6:10). Scripture calls believers to work, give, avoid greed and debt's bondage, and treasure God above wealth: "ye cannot serve God and mammon" (Matt 6:24).
What the text states
Wealth itself is not condemned, Abraham and Job were rich and godly, but the love of it is (1 Tim 6:10), and trusting it is folly (Luke 12:16-21, the rich fool). Jesus says treasure reveals the heart, "where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Matt 6:21), and that we cannot serve both God and money (6:24). The Bible commends work (2 Thess 3:10), generosity (2 Cor 9:7), contentment (1 Tim 6:6-8, Heb 13:5), and warns against the bondage of debt (Prov 22:7). Money is a tool and a test, good in its place, deadly as a master.
