What is total depravity? Is man totally unable to believe?
Rightly stated, sin has touched every part of man so no one seeks God on his own. It does not mean total inability to respond to the gospel. Depravity: yes. Inability: no.
What the text states
The picture is real: "none that seeketh after God" (Rom 3:11), the carnal mind "enmity against God" (Rom 8:7), man loves darkness (John 3:19). Every faculty is affected. But Scripture never says the sinner cannot respond to the gospel; it says he will not on his own, and God sends the word with power to move him. Romans 8:7 says the carnal mind cannot submit to the law, not that it cannot believe, and believing is the opposite of law-keeping (Rom 3:27, 4:5).
Calvinism's T makes depravity into total inability requiring regeneration before faith. We affirm depravity and deny inability, since the gospel itself is the power that brings a hostile man to faith (Rom 1:16).
