What is the difference between the rapture and the second coming?
They are two distinct events about seven years apart. At the rapture Christ comes in the air for His church (1 Thess 4:17); at the second coming He returns to the earth with His church to judge the nations and set up His kingdom (Rev 19:11-16).
What the text states
The contrasts are consistent. Rapture: Christ comes in the air, believers meet Him, the event is imminent and unsigned, the focus is the church, it is a mystery (1 Cor 15:51). Second coming: Christ's feet touch the Mount of Olives (Zech 14:4), every eye sees Him (Rev 1:7), it follows the signs of the tribulation, the focus is Israel and the nations, it is foretold throughout the Old Testament. At the rapture He takes the church to the Father's house (John 14:3); at the second coming He comes with "ten thousands of his saints" (Jude 14) already with Him.
Those who collapse the two into one event read every "coming" passage as the same day. We hold them distinct because the details cannot be harmonized as one event: a coming in the air to gather versus a coming to the earth with the gathered.
