Is the church spiritual Israel? Has the church replaced Israel?
No. The church has not replaced Israel. Paul asks it directly, "Hath God cast away his people? God forbid" (Rom 11:1), and promises Israel a future: the natural branches "shall be graffed in" (Rom 11:23). The church and Israel are distinct.
What the text states
Replacement theology (supersessionism) holds the church inherited Israel's promises and Israel has no distinct future. Paul denies it in Romans 9-11: Israel is set aside "until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in," and then "all Israel shall be saved" (Rom 11:25-26). The unconditional covenants, land to Abraham, throne to David, are not fulfilled in the church and await Israel in the millennium. God distinguishes them: "give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God" (1 Cor 10:32), three groups, not one.
Covenant theology reads Old Testament Israel promises as fulfilled spiritually in the church. We hold they remain literally Israel's, because Paul in Romans 11 keeps a future for national Israel after the church age.
