Chuck Smith, Answers for Today, chapter 11: Paul the apostle says, “All things are lawful for me.” I think that this goes into the area of entertainment, dancing, or the kind of music I listen to. But just a minute! Paul didn’t stop there. Though I have a total freedom and there is no condemnation, Paul said, “…all things are not expedient.” Expedient means “to help along the way.” The idea is that, as a Christian, I’m running in a race. Paul said, “Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize?” (1 Corinthians 9:24). There are things that can impede my progress, which can slow me down. They can keep me from winning the race. We are told to lay aside every weight and sin which so easily besets us, that we might run with patience the race that is set before us (Hebrews 12:1–2). These activities can become weights. Scripture, King James Version: 1 Corinthians 9:24, "Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain."; Hebrews 12:1-2, "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.".
